Food containers are a fundamental tool for following an athlete's nutrition plan. Containers with separate compartments allow you to keep proteins, carbohydrates, and salad apart, preserving each ingredient's freshness and texture. Quality BPA-free containers are microwave safe, leak-proof, and fit conveniently in a sports bag.
The best choice is BPA-free Tritan plastic or borosilicate glass. Tritan is lightweight, durable, and microwave safe. Glass does not absorb odors or stains but weighs more. For bringing food to training, prefer plastic containers for their light weight and shatter resistance.
For standard meal prep, 5-7 containers are enough to cover one week of lunches. If you also prepare breakfast and dinner, you will need 10-15 containers. Start with a smaller set and expand as needed. Different sizes work well for different meals throughout the day.
Most quality plastic containers are freezer safe down to -20 degrees. Always check the manufacturer label. Leave some empty space above the food in the container, as food expands when freezing. Glass containers are also freezer safe, but never put a hot glass container directly into the freezer.
Wash the container immediately after use and do not let food residue dry. For turmeric and tomato stains, soak the container in baking soda. To remove odors, keep newspaper or coffee grounds in the container overnight. If a container is heavily stained, it is time to replace it.
