
A quality shaker is essential gear in every gym bag. With a blending ball or mesh, a shaker creates a clump-free protein drink in just a few shakes. Modern shakers are leak-proof and odor-resistant, fit conveniently in a car or gym, and many models include a separate compartment for carrying powder or tablets.
The most popular size is 600-700 ml, which is perfect for preparing a single protein drink serving. If you mix protein with water and ice, choose a larger 800 ml model to leave room for shaking. Smaller 400 ml shakers work well for BCAA and creatine drinks.
Wash your shaker immediately after use with warm water and dish soap. If the odor has already set in, soak the shaker overnight in a baking soda solution (1 tbsp of baking soda per 500 ml of water). Wash the blending ball separately. Never leave protein residue in the shaker for more than a few hours, especially in warmth.
A shaker mixes powders with water well, but it cannot crush fruits and ice. You need a blender for smoothies. However, you can use a shaker to mix powder-based smoothie blends that contain pre-ground ingredients and only need to be mixed with liquid.
Most quality sports shakers are safe for the top rack of a dishwasher. Always check the manufacturer instructions, as some plastics can deform at high temperatures. The blending ball and lid are usually also dishwasher safe, but seals are best washed by hand.
