Blueberries are among the most antioxidant-rich berries in the world, containing abundant anthocyanins — pigments that give the berries their dark color and protect cells from oxidative stress. Blueberry supplements contain concentrated extract that provides the same benefits in a significantly smaller amount. Research links blueberry consumption to improved vision, cognitive brain function support, and cardiovascular health.
Blueberry anthocyanins support eye health by improving blood supply to the retina and protecting eye cells from oxidative damage. Studies show that blueberry extract helps relieve eye fatigue, especially during prolonged screen use. Standardized blueberry extract (25% anthocyanins) at 80-160 mg per day has been most commonly used in studies.
The recommended dose is 80-500 mg of standardized blueberry extract per day, depending on concentration. For eye support, 80-160 mg (25% anthocyanins) is sufficient. For cognitive function and general antioxidant protection, 300-500 mg per day is often used. Blueberry extract is well tolerated with side effects being rare.
Supplements provide concentrated anthocyanins that would be difficult to obtain in sufficient amounts from food alone — one capsule can contain as many anthocyanins as 100-200 g of fresh blueberries. However, supplements do not replace the fiber, vitamins, and minerals found in berries. Ideally combine both — eat fresh blueberries and take extract as well.
