Gym Etiquette: Unwritten Rules Every Beginner Must Know
Every gym has its own culture and unwritten rules. Breaking them won't get you kicked out, but it can create awkward situations and other members' resentment. Here's everything you need to know.
Golden Rule #1: Rerack Your Weights
This is the most important rule, and breaking it won't be forgiven by other gym-goers.
Why It Matters:
- Others don't know if equipment is in use
- Someone could get injured trying to move heavy plates
- It's simply rude
How to Do It Right:
- After finishing sets, remove plates from the bar
- Place plates in the CORRECT spot (same weights together)
- Dumbbells back on rack in correct order
- Don't leave weights on the floor
Exception:
If someone's waiting and says "I'll use the same weight," you can leave them.
Golden Rule #2: Wipe Down Your Equipment
No one wants to train in your sweat. Even if you don't see marks, wipe anyway.
What to Clean:
- Benches after use
- Machine seats and back supports
- Handles and bars
- Mats after stretching
How:
- Use gym's sanitizer spray/wipes
- If none available, use your towel
- Wipe before AND after (shows class)
Golden Rule #3: Don't Hog Equipment
Phone and Breaks:
- Don't sit on machine scrolling phone when not training
- Take rest breaks away from equipment
- If someone's waiting, be aware
"Working In" - Shared Use:
If someone asks: "Can I work in?"
- This means they want to use equipment during your rest periods
- Answer should be "yes" (unless you have 1 set left)
- You train, then them, then you, etc.
Supersets and Hogging:
- Don't claim 2-3 different pieces of equipment during peak hours
- If doing supersets, be ready to share
- Leave a marker (towel, bottle) to show you're using it
Golden Rule #4: Give Others Space
Personal Space:
- Don't stand directly in front of someone during their lift
- Don't train with dumbbells right in front of the rack (blocks access)
- Leave at least 1-2 meters distance
Mirrors:
- Don't stand between someone and mirror during their set
- Many use mirrors to check technique
- If you need to pass, wait until set is done
Racks and Platforms:
- Squat rack is for squats and barbell exercises
- Don't do bicep curls in squat rack (use dumbbells)
- Deadlift platforms are for deadlifts
Noise and Behavior
Dropping Weights:
- Controlled lowering is the norm
- Loud dropping is frowned upon in most gyms
- Exception: on lifting platforms with bumper plates
Grunting and Sounds:
- Light breathing is normal
- Loud "AHHH!" with every rep is disturbing
- Keep noise under control
Music:
- Use headphones
- Don't play through phone speaker
- Don't sing along loudly
Giving Advice:
- Don't give unsolicited advice
- If someone asks, then help
- Even if you see bad form, usually not your business
- Exception: if someone's about to get injured
Hygiene
Before Workout:
- Use deodorant
- Wear clean clothes
- Don't come to gym sick
During Workout:
- Use towel on bench/machine
- Wipe your sweat
- Don't cough/sneeze toward equipment
After Workout:
- Showering is courteous (especially if going to work/home)
- Don't leave wet clothes on locker room floor
- Clean up your belongings
Footwear:
- Clean indoor sports shoes
- Don't train barefoot (hygiene and safety reasons)
- Exception: some lifting shoes allow it
Locker Room Etiquette
General Rules:
- Don't hog a locker for hours
- Use a lock (secure valuables)
- Don't leave wet clothes everywhere
Shower:
- Don't spend half hour in there
- Bring your own shampoo/soap
- Dry yourself in shower area, not locker room
Privacy:
- Don't stare at others
- Some people are more modest - respect that
- Taking photos with phone is absolutely forbidden
Social Media and Photos
Selfies:
- Be quick, don't block
- Choose moments when others aren't in frame
- Don't use flash toward others
Filming Others:
- Ask permission BEFORE
- Don't film anyone without consent
- Especially not to mock them
Posting:
- Don't include others' faces without permission
- Be aware of background
Peak Hours and Waiting
Peak Hours (typically):
- Morning 6-9am
- Evening 5-8pm
- Monday is busiest day
How to Behave During Peak Hours:
- Be more efficient (shorter rest periods)
- Be ready to share equipment
- Don't claim multiple machines
- Consider alternatives if queue is long
Waiting:
- Don't stand right behind someone (pressure)
- Ask politely: "How many sets do you have left?"
- Offer "working in" option
- Go do something else meanwhile
Specific Situations
Someone Using Equipment Wrong:
- Usually not your business
- If they ask for advice, help
- If they're about to hurt themselves, warn them
Someone Takes "Your" Machine:
- It's not your machine
- If you didn't mark it (towel/bottle), it's free
- Politely ask if they noticed you
Someone Doing Supersets on Your Machine:
- Ask: "Are you still using this?"
- Offer "working in"
- Be understanding
Someone Talks to You During Workout:
- Short answer is okay
- "I'm in the middle of a set" is polite way to end it
- Headphones signal: "Don't disturb"
What to Do When Someone Breaks Rules?
Minor Violations:
- Let it go, not your problem
- Focus on your workout
If It Affects You:
- Polite asking: "Are you still using those plates?"
